Our country is not heading in a good direction, in any sense. Financially, we are heading for ruin. If our national debt was spread to every taxpaying citizen, each would easily owe more than $150,000 in loans, in addition to any personal debt accrued over the years (forbes.com). Certainly we cannot say our country has a good moral sense of direction, either. More than 900,000 children were legally murdered as they grew inside what they thought to be the safety of their mother’s womb (abort73.com). Our country is not heading in a good direction, in any sense.
The current election cycle is garnering more attention than any in recent memory. More than 84 million people watched the presidential debate on September 26, 2016 (cnn.com). People are paying attention to this presidential election, and I think it is more than the reality TV antics that are constantly playing out. People are looking for hope. People are looking for a solution to the problems facing our country. What so many are sadly failing to realize is that there is only one solution which will truly work, the only one in whom our hope will not be disappointed: The Lord Jesus Christ.
“And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” -Romans 5:3–6 (NASB95)The hope of God which the Holy Spirit poured out in their hearts is the same hope Christians hold today: hope for salvation, the forgiveness of sins through the death of Christ, and that hope does not disappoint. If our country would embrace the Savior who gave His life for them, He would lead them in wisdom beyond what any human could offer.
Brethren, when conversations shift to politics and the candidates available, remind your peers that hope exists in none of them, but only in God and in following His ways. He is the only solution to all our problems, and is the only One who can guarantee the ultimate success: life after death. Place your hope in Him, not in a man or woman who seems shrewd in the wisdom of the world.
"Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame." -1 Peter 3:13–16 (NASB95)
