It’s OK if You Don’t Know Everything
Small children and adults alike have all fallen prey to the “how?” and “why?” syndrome. The desire to know about what happens in the world and why is something we all have. Sometimes we even act like we know when we don’t, just to impress other people…who also don’t know.
Many times we can know the answers to our questions. All it takes is a little bit of time and effort in researching and studying the particular subject, and we may find our answer. There are things, however, that we do not and will not know for sure until the Lord comes again. At that point we may not even care about the answers, but that’s beside the point.
In the book of Job in the Old Testament, many things happened to Job that he did not understand. He was an upright and righteous man who feared God and kept His commands. He sacrificed to and worshipped the Lord regularly. Job was the model man.
Then his livestock were killed. Then his servants were killed. Then his camels were stolen. Then his children died. Then his body broke out in boils, covering every inch of his body. Then his wife turned against him and God. Then three friends came to him and told him it was all his fault, that because of his sinfulness all these things had happened to him and his family.
Job began crying out to God to tell him why these things were happening, to answer his questions, to come and justify His dealings with Job. Eventually God did come to Job.
In the last part of the book of Job, God comes and poses many questions to Job which Job was unable to answer. These were questions about creation and the wind and the snow and the rain, the oceans and things in them. Job was left speechless against God’s line of questioning, and had only praises for God when he realized the power and knowledge and wisdom of God.
God didn’t answer Job’s questions. God didn’t justify what was happening to Job, other than to say “I AM in charge” [paraphrased]. We ought to stop worrying about whether we are being treated justly or unjustly, whether we are getting what we deserve or not, and start realizing who is in charge and who we serve, the Almighty God. The answers to the questions of “how could this happen!” and “why me?!” will melt away in the glory of our God, when we take the time to think about it. Let God rule your life, and you will be blessed.
