Content to Remind
Our world is full of "new" things. Shows on TV are expected to have new episodes every week, every year new cars are produced and sold to the public, scientists are constantly making new discoveries. In just a short time new video game consoles will be sold to the public, along with new games and new accessories. If anything can be said confidently about our world it is that we like new things.
At some point, however, wouldn't it be nice to find some peace? Wouldn't it be great to find something in our world that you can have peace knowing that the "next new thing" won't replace? In the moment when you desire something that will never be replaced or changed, God is there to fill that position.
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9 Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings... -Hebrews 13:8–9a
Jesus is a constant in a word that is full of variables. In a world whose laws, beliefs, and morals are constantly in flux, Jesus provides a wonderful and peaceful contrast. The teachings He gave 2000 years ago when He walked the earth are the same now as they were then. The technology we have discovered, the hobbies we have created, the corruption that has destroyed many civilizations until now, none of them have changed or will ever change the message of Jesus Christ to us.
It is not my goal as a minister of God's Word to bring a new teaching or a new discovery. It is my humble goal to simply remind those around me of the truth that Jesus has already given, by which we will be judged on the last day (John 12:48). If my name is forgotten and my life is unremembered by those a hundred years from now, I am satisfied as long as the standard of Christ is upheld.
12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. -2 Peter 1:12–15
The goal is clear: after any of us are gone, those who have known us should be able to call to mind the truths of God's Word and the standards He sets for our lives on earth, and they should be able to do so because of the conversations we have had together and the example they have seen from the life we lived and the choices we have made. May all of us leave such a wake.
